Governor Braun Has Plan To Make I-70 A Toll Road

Indianapolis, In. – Governor Mike Braun is moving forward with a massive $6.5 billion plan to transform I-70 into a statewide toll road. Documents recently submitted to federal officials reveal that passenger cars would be charged roughly ten cents per mile, costing drivers nearly $16 to cross from border to border, while commercial trucks could pay upwards of $80. State officials argue the revenue is the only way to fund the critical widening of the aging highway to six lanes as gas tax income declines. If federal waivers are approved, electronic “open-road” tolling sensors could be active as early as 2029, though the state promises U.S. 40 will remain a free alternative for local commuters.
