Terre Haute, In. – A new city ordinance designed to hold landlords accountable and improve housing safety is now officially in effect across Terre Haute. As of January 1st all owners of rental properties—including single-family homes, apartments, and short-term rentals like Air BnB’s—must register their units with the city’s new Rental Registration and Inspection Program. The code creates a centralized database, allowing inspectors to quickly contact owners—especially out-of-town landlords—regarding necessary repairs or safety violations. City inspectors are now authorized to conduct issue-specific inspections to ensure units meet minimum habitability and safety standards. City officials emphasized that the program aims to eliminate blight and protect tenant health rather than serve as a punitive measure.
