Sullivan County, In. – Health officials are on high alert after a major bird flu outbreak was confirmed at a commercial turkey farm in Sullivan County. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) reported that a flock of over 45 thousand turkeys tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) after the owner discovered a large number of birds dead overnight late last week. This marks the first case of the virus in southwestern Indiana in nearly a year. In response, the Indiana State Board of Animal Health has placed the affected farm under a strict quarantine and a mandatory weekly testing is required for all commercial and hobby flocks within a 6.2-mile radius in central Sullivan County. Monitoring has been extended into neighboring Knox and Greene counties. Officials emphasize that this outbreak does not pose a food safety risk, as infected birds do not enter the food supply.
