Update On Shelburn Fatal Train Pedestrian Accident

SHELBURN, Ind. — A Sullivan County resident was killed in a train-pedestrian accident.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a train/pedestrian collision near Shelburn at 8:25 p.m. Sunday. 38-year-old Ashley Lewis of Shelburn was going west on Mill Street and had just crossed the CSX rail crossing as a northbound train neared the crossroads, according to Deputy Colt Thompson.

Lewis was brushed by the locomotive as it passed, with the lights on and the horn blowing, resulting in life-threatening injuries.

She was carried by an ambulance before being transferred to Indianapolis by Lifeline chopper. Lewis’ death was reported to the Sheriff’s Office at 1:30 a.m. by Methodist Hospital officials and the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
