SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Even though the day was shorter than expected again — this time because of morning rain — IndyCar drivers spent the better part of four hours Thursday afternoon testing and preparing for the Indianapolis 500 on the IMS oval. Series points leader Josef Newgarden set the fastest time of the day at 229.519 mph — and said it was a good day that gave him a lot of confidence heading into the month of May. As for the issues with the surface in the warm-up lanes of IMS drivers were dealing with on Wednesday — some drivers said it was better but that some works still probably needed to be done.
